The jollof wars, explained

A friendly fight that has run for decades and probably will not end.

"Jollof Wars" refers to a long-running, mostly online debate — primarily between Nigerians and Ghanaians — over whose version of jollof rice is the best.

The fight is real. The food is real. The rivalry is, mostly, friendly. Restaurants, social media, and major events have leaned into it: Jollof Festival NYC, Jollof Battle Royale London.

Senegal, often called the original, sits the wars out — partly because the conversation is between two countries borrowing from a third.
